Introduction to Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering is a description of the product design process.

In the general understanding of engineering technicians, the product design process is a process from scratch. Designers first conceive the product's shape, performance and approximate technical parameters in mind, then build a 3D digital model of the product by drawing blueprints, and finally import this model into the manufacturing process to complete the entire product design and manufacturing cycle. Such a product design process is known as the "forward design" process.

Product design via reverse engineering can be regarded as a process from existence to design. Simply put, reverse engineering product design refers to the process of deriving product design data (including design drawings or digital models) based on an existing product model. In this sense, reverse engineering has long been applied in industrial design. Hull lofting design, widely used in the early shipbuilding industry, serves as a good example of reverse engineering. With the extensive application of computer technology in the manufacturing sector, especially the rapidly developing digital measurement technology, product modeling technology based on measured data has become the main focus of reverse engineering. Spatial data on the object surface acquired by digital measurement equipment (such as coordinate measuring machines and laser measuring devices) needs to be processed with reverse engineering technology to establish a 3D product model, which is then used in CAM systems for product manufacturing. Therefore, reverse engineering technology can be defined as a general term for digital technologies and geometric modeling technologies that convert physical product samples into 3D models. The implementation of reverse engineering requires collaboration across multiple fields and disciplines.
